WHO YOU ARE MATTERS
I was born and raised in Orange County, specifically Huntington Beach, California. Although I am unsure as to where I am going, I am hoping to one day start my own interior design business. I plan on getting there by working hard through multiple internships and networking. A couple of years ago, I began working for a small, local, candle company, Sand + Fog, which has since grown exponentially and become a huge success. Because the owners were previously interior designers, they have given me many helpful insights and have educated me on what it takes to run a successful business.
I believe I am like and unlike my parents in many ways. My mom and I both share many of the same interests such as, working out, going to the beach, shopping, and interior design. However, we are very different when it comes to our emotions. When she is upset, she can become very passive, which can be tough because I am more confrontational. On the other hand, as for my dad, him and I share the same interests in our creative processes, dedication, and humor. We both enjoy figuring out how to build things, solve problems, and ultimately make people laugh. But we are very different when it comes to our lifestyles. He is a mountain man at heart, who enjoys living in Montana, whereas I enjoy living close to the beach.
Because my parents have always encouraged me to pursue a path that I love and to find a job that makes me happy, I believe I have developed my own expectations for myself. I am grateful to have parents that have not and will not expect me to do something that I do not want to do. I know exactly where I want to be in the future and have already begun setting my own goals and expectations to get there.
Besides a relative, Shay McGee is a role model I look up to because she gave up everything to follow her dream and now runs one of the most successful design firms in the U.S.
If I had to pick one wild animal, I feel like I have a special connection with dolphins because they are curious, sociable, and friendly.
Reflecting on my childhood, one specific memory I have of a tree was my grandparent's treehouse that they had built for my brother and I. Whenever I would go over to their house, I would sprint to their backyard, climb up the ladder, and play in the treehouse until the sun went down.

Hi Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI've never met someone who has wanted to do interior design so I find that so cool and fascinating. I hope your aspirations of opening a business works out for you. I love the Sand + Fog candles, they're so good. It's super exciting how you were able to work with the owners and gave you great advice for you to take along the way. Good luck this semester!
Hi Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI love Huntington Beach! I bought my car there and love going down there to go to the beach. I think it's awesome that your parents don't pressure you to do anything in particular and want you to be happy and successful. I'm lucky enough to share that with you but a lot of other people aren't as lucky. I hope you continue to pursue your passion for interior design and I'm sure with hard work, dedication, and some good mentorship, you will be able to successfully open up your own business some day. I look forward to getting to know you more in class!
Ryan
Hi Taylor! Interior design is not something I am very well-versed in, but I have such an interest in it. In regards to specifically interior decorating, I know only slightly more. My roommates took the lead on that in our apartment, but will sometimes ask me where on a wall something works best! You clearly have a passion for it, so I see no reason why you won't run a successful business one day! Also, I wish I had said dolphins for my wild animal! I spend so much time in the ocean, only for me to choose an animal that lives on land.
ReplyDeleteTaylor, I was happy to read about how much you've benefitted from your ongoing stint at Sand + Fog! Interior Design is such an important field of work; it is the difference between a frustrated and a fulfilled household, community, and population. Best of luck with your efforts!
ReplyDeleteNo way. I also went to high school in OC! Not all of us know exactly what we want to do. I think it's cool to hear that you are interested in interior design and that you've interned to see whether it's something you want to continue. I think to find our passion, there's a lot of process of elimination. We have to try a lot of things to know what we want to do and what we don't.
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor! I loved reading about how you want to own your own business in interior design and that that is something you share with your mom. I also related myself with a marine animal, and taken your description for dolphins I can also see myself relating to them. I think it is very cool your grandparents had a tree house. I think that is something I would have really enjoyed doing as a kid as well. Sadly, tree houses are very uncommon in Panama so the closes to it I got was a wooden panel (acting as a floor) placed between some branches that lasted a couple of months maximum.
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor! Orange County is just about the best place possible to be interior designer! There's a hot real estate market and ample money to design the home/public space/office of your dreams. I have no doubt that your future business will be a success as you've described yourself as a "do it yourself" person and you enjoy connecting through humor. Best of luck with everything!
