Hot Yoga

Ever since I was in elementary school, my mom has done at least one hot yoga class a day. When I was extremely young, she would book her class for 5:00 am so she could be back by 6:30 am to get my brother and me ready for school. I will never forget looking at her every morning thinking “Why in the world does she look like she just showered with her clothes on.” It was the weirdest and most disturbing thing to see—especially right after waking up. In all seriousness, I never truly understood why anyone would want to sweat that much–especially my mom–but I eventually came around to it my sophomore year of high school.

I took my first-ever hot yoga class on a random Monday night after a stressful day at school. The second I walked into the scorching hot room (105 degrees to be exact), I distinctly remember thinking “I need to get out of here or else I am going to pass out and die” (so dramatic, I know). To say I struggled throughout the class is an understatement, but the feeling I felt after was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Even though I had no idea what I was doing throughout the entire 45 minutes, I felt more relaxed, calm, focused, detoxified, flexible, and overall, healthier and happier than any other workout has ever made me feel. Because of that, I began going at least once a day (sometimes twice) and as soon as I got the hang of it, I became extremely addicted.

Some benefits of doing hot yoga include:

  • Increased flexibility: The heat in the room helps to loosen muscles and joints, making it easier to stretch and improve flexibility.
  • Improved cardiovascular health: The intensity of postures and heat increases heart rates and provides a cardiovascular workout, which can improve heart health and help lower blood pressure.
  • Detoxification: The heat causes excessive sweat which can help flush out toxins from the body and promote overall detoxification.
  • Increased strength and endurance: Deep postures help build muscle strength and improve overall endurance.
  • Improved mental health: Practicing yoga in a heated room promotes relaxation and stress relief and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  • Better breathing: The heat and humidity of the room can significantly improve breathing and respiratory health by opening airways and expanding lung capacity.
  • Improved balance and focus: The intense concentration yoga requires helps improve balance, focus, and overall mind-body awareness.

  1. Hi Taylor, thank you for your post! I took my first-ever yoga class here at USC last year and I loved how relaxed and de-stressed it left me feeling. However, I’ve never heard of hot yoga—practicing in a 105-degree room sounds brutal! I hate exercising when it's hot and humid so I don’t know if I’d ever be strong enough to try it haha. Reading about the benefits of hot yoga was super informative though, and I’m glad you really enjoy it!

  3. Hi Taylor,
I enjoyed reading your post as I think hot yoga is very interesting! I've taken a few hot yoga classes at CorePower after my sister convinced me to try one with her last summer. The benefits you get from doing yoga are great, but I think the ones you get from hot yoga are even better! From your list, it seems like the benefits of doing hot yoga are pretty extensive so I should find a way to incorporate it back into my schedule!

  4. Hi Taylor, loved this post! I have never taken a yoga class, let alone a hot yoga class, so I think it's super cool that you've been attending ever since you were young! I've always wanted to try out yoga for the health benefits that you mentioned. Especially as this school year wraps up with finals coming up, yoga would definitely be a great stress-relieving activity.

  5. Hi Taylor,
I loved reading your post and how you made it so relatable! I recently started doing hot yoga and I have to agree with you, as soon as I walked in I thought I wasn't going to make it out. It was so hot and I had never worked out in that type of environment. However, as soon as the class ended I felt so much lighter and relaxed. I felt motivated to go on with my day and be productive. Overall I love going to hot yoga and the benefits it comes with it, I've noticed that it has helped my mental health a lot as well.
